Bwindi forest park, Gorilla Safaris
Located in the extreme south west of Uganda the park covers 331sq kms of dense rain forest. It is one of the largest natural forests in East Africa, containing both montane and lowland forest, making it the ideal habitat for the rare and magnificent mountain gorilla.
Since the late Diana Fossey brought their plight into the world spotlight, the numbers of this unique mammal have remained fairly constant with a worldwide population of approximately 600 (over half of which live in this park). There are two habituated groups of mountain gorillas with a maximum of six visitors to each group per day. Due to these restricted numbers it is best to book permits as far in advance as possible in order to avoid disappointment. The park ranges between 1160metres and 2607metres in altitude and contains at least 120 species of mammals, making it one of the richest ecosystems in Africa.
Although the main activity is mountain gorilla tracking, visitors may also see chimpanzee, blue monkey and baboon. As well as these other primates there are some 346 species of birds, 202 species of butterflies and 163 species of trees, thus catering for nature enthusiasts of all kinds.
The trekkers of gorillas in Bwindi national park must follow the rules and regulations for gorilla tours. The rules will be speculated to you by our staff and also by the tour guide before the search for these apes is on, at the starting point. Please endevour to abide by them for conservation purposes of the endangered species.
